Nestled on 5,500 acres of mountaintop above Lake Winnipesaukee is Castle in the Clouds, a 16-room Craftsman style mansion built in 1914 by a millionaire shoe manufacturer and designed by notable architect J. William Beal. Unique features of Castle in the Clouds include a circular shower, central vacuum systems and interlocking kitchen tiles – all very unusual for the time. Today, Castle in the Clouds is owned and protected by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust and the Castle Preservation Society. Grounds are open to the public from May to October.
