The north country town of Dixville, New Hampshire was granted by the legislature to Timothy Dix Jr. in 1805 and contained about 29,340 acres, and the price was $4,500. It was not organized for voting purposes until 1960. Known as the first place in the nation from which vote totals are reported during presidential elections; voters cast their ballots at midnight. Dixville offers some phenomenal hiking in Dixville Notch State Park, which spans 127 acres. Within the park is a scenic gorge and waterfalls on two mountain brooks. Hiking trails lead to Table Rock and nearby mountains. The park is also a great spot for picnicking. Also located in Dixville is the Balsams Grand Resort, which includes the Balsams Wilderness Ski Area, once considered to be one of the premiere destinations in northern New Hampshire, the Balsams is under renovations and expects to re-open in the future.
