Dartmouth Lake Sunapee NH Boating Guide
Hanover Lebanon New Hampshire Marinas & Boat Dealers
Boat on Lake Sunapee – that is the big lake in the Dartmouth – Lake Sunapee region. Sunapee is a deep lake with lunker togue or Lake Trout as they are known. The Dartmouth – Sunapee region of the Upper Valley is great place for boating fun. The Connecticut River and Mascoma Lake are busy boating places with several nice boat launches available. Andover
Blackwater River
Runs: Cilleyville to West Sailsbury, West Sailsbury to the Contoocook
Length: Over 21 miles
Kayaking. Gentle paddling above the floodwater control dam in West Sailsbury, whitewater below. If you put in below the intersection of NH Rte 4A and Rte 11 in Andover, the first 3 miles include a short Class III rapid followed by some sections of Class I and II’s. Put in at the covered bridge on NH Rte 4 in Andover if you choose to skip the section of whitewater. This will lead you through a series of ponds, marshes, and wetlands; it eventually widens out into a section know as “the Bay”. At the bottom there is a broken dam, you must stop and take out. You may put in again below the dam and continue down the river for approximately 12 miles of contryside with only a few small rapids, only hazardous downed trees. The take out is about 1 mile upstream from the floodwater control dam in Webster.
After the dam, the Blackwater River becomes one of the most challenging rivers in the state. Class IV and V rapids in this section include notches, holes, boulders, and turbulence compared to a washing machine. If you make it past this section of hard water, you will then go into a 6 mile section that joins into the Contoocook at Broad Cove, located in Hopkinton.
Canaan
Mascoma River
Runs: Canaan Center to Mascoma Lake to Lebanon
Length: Over 5 miles
Kayaking. Relatively gentle with some Class II rapids through remains of old dams and railroad bridges. Slows as it reaches Rte 4 and runs quite smoothly through West Canaan and Enfield, several road crossings and easy accesses. Cross the north end of Mascoma Lake and take out at the dam.
If you are a fan of whitewater, put in just below the dam. Continues for about 5 miles of whitewater with class II with some Class III and IV sections. Take out is in Lebanon at a parking lot just before the Rte 120 bridge.
