Colebrook NH Vacations: Le Rendezvous
Change comes slowly in this part of the world. The amazing north country town of Colebrook, on the Connecticut River, was served only by stagecoach until the late 1800’s when the railroad finally came to town. Townsfolk usually take things in stride, and are generally amicable and friendly. But don’t try to take away their chocolate madeleines or freshly baked bread made by the towns only French Bakery!
In 2001, Verlaine Daeron, and partner Marc Ounic, both of French citizenry visited this friendly town of less than 2,500 people and purchased an historic building – a former bank and renovated it into Le Rendezvous French Bakery and Cafe.
The renovations to the building and aroma of baking brought smiles to faces of area residents, at least until, spring of 2009. It was then when Ms. Daeron reported the US Embassy was denying her visa due to the lack of “viability” of her Colebrook business. Not to be denied chocolate madeleines or fresh baked croissants, area residents responded. Acting quickly, with pen-in-hand, the US Embassy in Paris was flooded with dozens of letters urging reconsideration and extolling the virtues of ginger cookies, French breads, and rolls.
The US Embassy in France reversed its decision and the aroma of freshly baked goodies is back in Colebrook. A victory for the people, some are even calling it “an emotional boost for the town”. We say it is just one more reason to visit this beautiful region of northern New England.
Le Rendez-vous offers freshly baked breads, baguettes and round white loaves known as batards. The bakery also features croissants filled with apple, blueberry, chocolate, rhubarb or raspberry. We highly recommend the madeleines filled with creamy Belgium chocolate.
Le Rendez-Vous also has a variety of fresh baking supplies, imported teas and jams, seasoned oils, gluten-free products and other natural baking ingredients.
Worth a special trip, the Rendez-Vous is back baking something fresh and delicious. Time to visit Colebrook and say hello to Daeron and Marc. A victory for Colebrook the entire town should be proud of and an outcome we can all enjoy.
