Canaan, New Hampshire was chartered in 1761 by Governor Wentworth and named after the hometown of early settlers from Canaan, Connecticut. In 1847 the Northern Railroad came to Canaan, launching growth and development for the small settlement. Soon after, Canaan was home to several water powered mills, grist mills and a tannery.
In 1907 there was a head on collision in Cannan between the southbound Quebec to Boston express and a northbound freight train, killing 25. In 1923 the town center was destroyed by a fire which took out nearly 50 homes and businesses. Historical points of interest in Canaan include the Northern Rail Trail and Canaan Historical Museum.
