Center Harbor NHLakes region community Center Harbor NHCenter Harbor, New Hampshire gets its name from two sources: from its location, centered between Meredith and Moultonborough Harbors, and also for the Senter family, who were owners of a large amount of property in the area. Center Harbor was a landing place for lake steamers and stagecoaches, making it a popular New England summer resort. Center Harbor was also favorite spot of John Greenleaf Whittier, and the home of Dudley Leavitt, author of the first Farmer’s Almanac in 1797.

Center Harbor is the winter home for the MS Mount Washington – the largest cruise ship on Lake Winnipesaukee. The ship awaits spring every winter in the waters of Center Harbor (see photo below). Ice houses may be seen every winter during the coldest weeks as ice fishing is a popular winter sport and the harbor is an ideal location for trout, salmon, musk and other species.

The first intercollegiate sporting event in America took place in Center Harbor. On August 3, 1852 Harvard defeated Yale in the first Harvard-Yale Regatta. Penny Pitou a former Olympic Skier and famous New Hampshire person learned to ski while living in Center Harbor. She is a member of the New England Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
