It was named in honor of John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich. The Earl is known as the inventor of the sandwich, requesting from his servant a thin slab of meat placed between two slices of bread, which he consumed while intent upon the gaming table. The town of Sandwich is in the Sandwich Range, with seventeen listed peaks, including Sandwich Dome.

Sandwich has retained the look and feel of an old New England village – which has made Sandwich a popular destination. The town features dog-sled races in February and and annual Old Home Week Celebration and Art Show every August on the town green. There is a nice General Store and Deli in town … so yes, you may have a sandwich in Sandwich! – tell them sent you. Sandwich, NH is rich in history and natural beauty and is popular with hikers and naturalists. The Sandwich Fair is held here every Columbus Day Weekend. The Sandwich Historical Society has an exceptional collection in the Marston House Museum, 4 Maple Street, Ctr. Sandwich.
