The town of Ellsworth was originally named Trecothick, in honor of Barlow Trecothick, Lord Mayor of London and head of the East India Company. Still only sparsely populated, the town was incorporated as Ellsworth in 1802, after Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth of Connecticut. Justice Ellsworth was known for having negotiated the peace treaty with France that resulted in the Louisiana Purchase.
