The town of Lyman, New Hampshire was granted in 1761. Lyman was named for General Phineas Lyman, an active commander in the Seven Years’ War with France and Spain. General Lyman was compensated for his services by grants in Lyman, Grantham, and Lisbon, and eleven towns in what is now Vermont. A section of Lyman was taken by legislature in 1854 to form the town of Monroe.
