New Hampshire Mt Washington Auto Road

Route 16, Pinkham Notch, Gorham, NH • Ph: 603-466-3988

Auto Road was originally known as the Mount Washington Carriage Road, because it was built before the invention of the automobile. The State of New Hampshire Legislature founded the Mount Washington Carriage Road Company in 1853 to design and built this mountain top roadway. Work on the road began in 1854. Today, the Mt. Washington Auto Road route ascends almost a mile in elevation to the 6288′ summit at an average grade of 12% along the mostly-paved road. The views are spectacular and there are several "look outs" to stop on the way to the summit. The Auto Road Company hosts many special events during the summer season, such as several unique races and a birthday celebration. If you have driven around northern New England you probably has spotted the famous "This Car Climbed Mount Washington" bumper sticker. In addition to driving your vehicle up the road, you may take a ride up the mountain road in a stage (van) or even walk. A fee is charged and the road is sometimes closed due to adverse weather conditions at the top. Call in advance to confirm rates and hours of operation. The Auto Road is open from mid-May till mid-October, weather permitting. The tollhouse opens at 7:30 AM and closes at 6:00 PM. The gate at the bottom is locked at 7:30 PM.
