Manchester area sports fans waited a long time for a professional sports franchise to come to town and now, thanks to AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) the wait is over. AEG is the international corporation that owns and operates the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League. The company is one of the largest sports entertainment franchises in the world and also owns the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League, the Monarch parent club. AEG runs a first class operation and the Manchester area is responding with near sell-out crowds for nearly every game. Last season (2002/2003) the club set an American Hockey League attendance record with 21 sell-outs of 40 home games! Manchester is a great sports town and that fact combined with a well-run franchise playing in a great facility (The Verizon Wireless Arena) makes for a winning combination. Manchester Monarchs hockey games are generally played on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon, when the team is in town. The Verizon Wireless Arena has a seating capacity of 9,016 for Monarchs hockey. The Monarchs first season was the 2001/2002 year. The American Hockey League schedule features plenty of local rivalries; Portland, ME, Lowell, Worcester, and Springfield MA , Hartford, CT, and Providence RI all have teams in the AHL. The league has a total of 28 competing in four divisions. If you’re looking for a truly memorable sports night out take in a professional hockey game in Manchester.
