Founded in 1823, the New Hampshire Historical Society has long been dedicated to educating the public about the history of New Hampshire, through the use of historical documents and objects, a library, museum, and outreach programs. They have a strong educational program that touches children throughout the state. The 1911 Beaux Arts building at 30 Park Street, Concord, NH, designed by Guy Lowell, is the center of the Society’s activities. Exhibitions, educational programs, and a research library are offered to its members and visitors. The Society has an extensive collection of objects and archives related to New Hampshire’s history. Each year, the Society uses its collections to serve members and visitors through its research library, exhibitions, publications, and outreach programs. The Society collects objects, books, manuscripts, and images that document New Hampshire’s history. The collections include approximately 33,000 museum objects, 50,000 printed volumes, 1.5 million pages of manuscripts, 800,000 pages of newspapers, 250,000 photographic images, 10,000 broadsides and ephemera items. The Society offers changing exhibitions on a variety of topics and long-term displays of selected objects, including paintings, New Hampshire-made furniture, the original eagle from the New Hampshire State House, and Revolutionary War flags.

Review“For a small museum, it has a nice variety of artifacts which are well-curated to tell a clear, chronological story of the history of the state.  It begins with an Abenaki wigwam in which you can hear a recorded story told by well-known Abenaki author and storyteller, Joseph Bruchac.  There are other interactive and question-based exhibits throughout.  I was sorry to see the Abenaki drop out of the narrative after the colonial period – if the continuing presence of the People of the Dawn were included it would improve this little museum.” – Yelp Review

Review“There are a lot of beautiful buildings right in this small concentrated area of Concord, like the State Capitol, which are fun to take pictures of, but it was too chilly to walk around outside the whole time so we ducked in here, and ended up really enjoying it. The early Native American history and natural history of the area was most well-done. I was also impressed by the staff. I randomly asked if “Franklin Pierce was as bad a president as they make him out to be in text books,” and the lady at the desk had a very well-thought answer as to why it’s possible we can’t know for sure because the string of presidents before and after, and including Pierce, were faced with serving during an extremely difficult era. Definitely came away with a better appreciation for both local and national history.” – Trip Advisor Review
