The town of Canterbury , NH was named for William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury, when first granted by Lieutenant Governor Wentworth in 1727. Canterbury was originally a fort and trading post where the Penacook Indians came to trade. Canterbury was also home to the last colony of Shakers, and the Canterbury Shaker Village is now an internationally known historic site and museum. Other notable historic sites in the village of Canterbury include Worsted Church and Shaker’s Office.
