Welcome to Penacook, New Hampshire. The first settlement in 1659 was named Pennacook, for the Indian name ‘Pannukog,’ meaning crooked place or bend in the river. The village of Penacook is a settlement located north of the center of Concord. Penacook is located along a stretch of the Contoocook River, just before it meets the Merrimack River. Penacook was a thriving mill town. Like most mill towns in New England, most of the factories are now closed. The native Americans known as the Pennacook tribe once lived in this area. Penacook Village was also known as Fisherville. Former New York Yankee third baseman, Red Rolfe, was born in Penacook. Rolfe was also a former Athletic Director at Dartmouth College.
